The Livingston County chapter of AFP-MI worked with the Lansing office to send a questionnaire to all 175 local candidates. They felt that it is important for the voters to know where these candidates stand on issues that are important to the county.

This demonstrates that the grassroots can still have an impact on our elected officials. Now there is a more ominous danger. Americans for Prosperity Circulates Questionnaire to Clarify Candidates’ Positions

LANSING – The Michigan chapter of Americans for Prosperity (AFP-MI), a grassroots free-market organization, is circulating a questionnaire to candidates running for State House. The group will be compiling a comprehensive guidebook to educate its more than 10,000 members on candidates’ positions. The questionnaire will cover issues including: the appropriate size and scope of government, taxes on businesses, transparency in government, Right to Work laws, regulations that would increase the price of energy, and property assessments.

LANSING – Americans for Prosperity (AFP) is proud to announce that Scott Hagerstrom will be the new state director of its Michigan chapter. He joins AFP after spending 15 years working in the Michigan House of Representatives as a legislative director, most recently for Rep. Jack Hoogendyk (61st-Kalamazoo). Scott brings a long history of experience in Michigan politics and grassroots activism, which will be invaluable to AFP’s mission of educating citizens about the virtues of small government, low taxes, restrained spending, transparency in governance and helping to rebuild the Michigan economy.

AFP Michigan Earmark Protest

AFP Michigan activists protested a proposed $35 billion federal pork barrel project at the capitol in Lansing. The group was accompanied by ten flying pigs. They drove home the fact that, although pork may fly, the earmark process must be grounded.

Secretary of State's Office is Now Transparent
May 15, 2008
AFP Michigan is working with a number of legislators to open the state’s checkbook. State Representative Jack Hoogendyke (R - Kalamazoo) has introduced legislation in the House, and a similar bill may soon make its way to the Senate. AFP has also talked with a score of local government officials who want transparency in their county or township. Now, Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land has taken her office transparent on her website. We congratulate Secretary Land on this action. Land becomes the second statewide officeholder to let us know how our money is being spent. Previously, Attorney General Mike Cox provided information regarding his office expenditures on the AG website.

WMU Students Promote Transparency

The Students for Prosperity chapter at Western Michigan University has taken on the issue of transparency at the Kalamazoo campus. Derek Robinson and Brendan Cole, SFP President and Vice President, recently met with WMU President John Dunn. They asked him to have the university's monthly expenditure reports converted to a PDF and post them on its website. The Western Herald, WMU's student operated newspaper, recognized the students’ efforts in an article earlier this month.
